Jacques Smeets: The Easter Egg Project
Jacques Smeets from Belgium was instantly interested when he heard about Vhutshilo Mountain School from his daughter Olivia, who was doing an internship at Madi A Thavha Mountain Lodge in Northern Limpopo.
The Easter Egg Brainstorm
He really wanted to do something to help the school. He first went to a supermarket in Belgium asking if they had any chocolate eggs left after Easter. He explained about the school and the supermarket immediately gave him all the Easter eggs that were not sold. His plan was to send the eggs to Olivia to distribute to the children Vhutshilo. She was touched by her Dad’s actions, but explaine to him that instead of giving the children unhealthy chocolate, it would be better to give the school money to buy food and supplies locally.
KHC Dragons Pitch In
Undeterred and determined to help the school, Jacques came up with a brilliant idea! He contacted his favourite field hockey team, the ladies KHC Dragons in Belgium. On a beautiful, sunny Sunday when the ladies and men played, he came with his Easter eggs to sell them to the crowd. The ladies of the team were so moved by his efforts that they helped him with selling the eggs. A week after he made the money, Jacques and his family travelled to South Africa to meet Olivia and she took them to Vhutshilo Mountain School so that he could personally deliver give them the money he had collected.
